The City of Midland asks residents to help their fire and water departments work by "adopting" the fire hydrant closest to their home or business to keep it free of snow during the winter season.
Residents can help by uncovering their closest fire hydrant during their shoveling activities after each and every snowfall. Clear a path approximately 3 feet around the hydrant and shovel a path from the street or roadway up to the fire hydrant. These actions will allow the Midland Fire Department to quickly locate the fire hydrant and obtain a water supply for firefighting activities, as well as give city water distribution crews room to work on the hydrant should the need arise. If you use a plowing service for your home or business, it may help to remind your plow driver about this need as well.
Please consider helping neighbors who are elderly or have a medical condition by shoveling out the hydrant in front of their home," states a news release the city issued Friday.
This act of kindness will benefit the entire neighborhood - and might even keep your family safe when precious seconds count. At a fire, the fire department must quickly locate and gain a water supply source from the closest fire hydrant."
The City of Midland thanks residents for their help in keeping our community safe by clearing the city's fire hydrants of snow. Midland Fire Department at 989-837-3410.
